@2IS MODIFYING STATS ALWAYS DISHONEST?

I got involved in one game and decided I'd like to play a Monk as a role
playing challenge which I felt I could do well at and enjoy.
I rolled up my character (4D6, take the best three), but I'd only got a 14
for Wisdom when the book says I needed a 15. I'd already been told that the
GM would insist on my using the stats I'd rolled, so no Monk.
To my mind that is unnecessarily restrictive, so I increased my Wisdom to 15
to allow me to play the character. BUT, to compensate, I took one point off
my TWO lowest stats to compensate for this.
As a matter of interest, when I run a system, I never go for the "roll the
dice" method of stat generation, but allow people a set number of points or,
for instance, two High stats, two Average and two Low so they can select
what sort of character they /want/ to play and tailor the stats accordingly.
IMO this allows the PLAYER to enjoy themselves which is, after all, what the
game is all about.
I've never really gone for the experience point system, because it almost
/encourages/ people to cheat. Certainly if I do use one I never let the
players know what XP they are on. I much prefer a system which doesn't have
artificial "levels", but which has more individual skills or areas.
If DMs really /want/ to cheat, they are going to do it. I just adjust what
happens to them to compensate for it, eg they take a little more damage or
don't find as much treasure etc.
